Way Beyond The Music Artist Interview With James Pardo

MEET JAMES PARDO

BIO:

"My name is James Pardo. I make up songs and sing them for you. I do not take requests, unless they are for my songs.
I am happiest when I’m singing and playing. I am unhappiest all the other time.
If you like my songs, that’s great. If you don’t like them, well, I’m old enough to know I can’t please everyone, so I don’t bother trying. That is my polite way of telling you to just let me play my songs and enjoy myself while playing.  I don’t go bothering you when you’re working, so just let me work and have fun."
Literally his BIO on his website!!! Talk about straight up BALLS!!!
That is honestly the best way to introduce James Pardo!!! He is a no BS kinda guy that is uber talented and all about HIS music..... well and GOOD music too!!! I had the honor and priveledge to interview James (who I truly consider a brother and dear friend) at Albert Icehouse & Dancehall in Albert, Texas on 11/26/2019!!! If you ever wanted to meet a more talented and skilled performer, you truly would be hard pressed. Ok, so maybe I'm a little biased because his songs touch my soul and I can feel his emotions when I listen to his music... so sue me!!!  This is a much watch interview that truly goes.... WAY BEYOND THE MUSIC!!!

The best part about James Pardo is his ability to find the humor in any situation!!!  For example study the following picture:

This literally was on the sign of the venue he was playing tonight!!! LOL!!! If you ever get a chance to go to a James Pardo show remember this.... REQUEST AN ORIGINAL song.... You have been warned!!! I mean... I tried!!!!

Why You Never Get An Email Response

This was an article I read on www.bandzoogle.com (who I recommend for any musician looking for an easy to create, use, and functioning website. You can check mine out at www.marksebby.com.

This is an excerpt from Ari Herstand’s book How to Make It in the New Music Business (second edition).
We’ve all been there. You’re attempting to manage your business, but one extremely necessary party isn’t responding to your emails.
I know this can be awfully frustrating when you’re contacting clubs for potential shows, music supervisors for placement, other musicians for favors, press for reviews, or festivals for booking and no one is getting back to you. So what do you do?
Follow up. The key to this industry is polite persistence.
I’ve gotten nearly everyone to reply to my email through this method (even rock stars and big-time managers). If after three beautifully crafted emails they still haven’t gotten back to you, don’t get discouraged.
They’ll scan your email each time—if not just the subject line or sender field—and each time they’ll make a mental note (always Reply from the original email so they can see the thread and the subject line says “Re:_____”). If they see a seventh email from you with each one more polite than the last, they’ll eventually write you back.
If people don’t respond to your email, it isn’t because they hate you. It isn’t because your music sucks. It isn’t because they found out you slept with their ex (well… maybe).
It’s because they just don’t have the time. Right. Now.
I know it’s tough to say the same thing over and over again, but find a way to be just as kind each time with different wording. And above all, keep the emails short. One of the reasons people don’t respond is because they open your email and see it’s a mini-novel. No one has the time for that.
And remember, keep your initial email under eight sentences. “But Ari, I just spent three weeks crafting the most poetic, perfectly worded essay explaining why there has never been a band more ideal than us to play this club.” Don’t care. Delete. Rewrite. Eight sentences! No more!
It’s also about timing and luck. Some days they’re putting out fires, and other times they’re staring aimlessly at their computer screen when your email comes in and reply right away.
Also, to help curb your neuroses, install the email add-on HubSpot to see who has, in fact, opened your email (syncs with Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail).
You’ll at least know if the other party was interested enough to even give it an open. If not, maybe you should update your subject line (but still reply from the original email with the “Re:___ .” But even if they do open it (as noted above), they may just not have the time to respond or deal with it. So, again, follow up.
Once you do get an email response, you should reply right away. Do not make them wait (like they made you wait). This is not a dating game via text. If they’ve finally taken the time to devote the mental and emotional effort it takes to fully concentrate on your issue in this moment, every passing minute from when they hit Send to when you reply, they will increasingly lose interest. And if you wait too long to reply to their response, you may have to play the follow-up game all over again.
On one occasion, I had been trying to get into a club (that will go unnamed) for months (years). One day I finally got a response. I immediately replied back, and then the booker immediately responded back to me. And we basically had about 20 back and forths within the span of 10 minutes. I was top of mind, so it was super easy to just continue the conversation. Show booked, negotiated, locked down (with some jokes thrown in for good measure), in 10 minutes (+ 3 years).

Texas Music Tip Of The Day - Are You Ready???

Are You Ready???

So, are you really ready? As a new musician that just started performing are you ready for that next step. Listen, one of the most important things you can do as a new performing musician is be REALISTIC and HONEST with yourself. Let's face it, everyone and their mother is trying to get out there and play live shows (especially in the state of Texas). We even have musicians moving here from other states because our scene is so amazing. The point of this blog post is to BEG you to make sure you're ready for the next step in your career. Let's dive in!!!

So, you've got your set list practiced and rehearsed and polished up and you're ready for that 3-4 hour show at your local dive bar for $100 (or less) a man. You've been working really hard and you've played a few open mic nights. You know in your heart and mind it's time for you to "take this show on the road" and finally "get your name out there". You tell yourself "I know I'm better than (insert the name of the last guy you saw lay an egg at the venue you've got your eye on). Are you really ready though???

Let's assume you have a solid 2-4 set list of covers down and you have done your homework. Let's assume you have been told by all your "friends", family, and fans that you need to go play at (insert venue name here). I mean you feel you've done everything right, correct??? You have been practicing hard and really getting better!!! Well cool!!! That is what this is all about. However, before you contact that venue, rather its a dive bar or a well established venue; I would suggest you read the checklist below and make sure YOU ARE READY!!!

AM I READY CHECKLIST:

  • DO I HAVE PROFESSIONAL SOUND EQUIPMENT AND THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO RUN IT?
  • DOES MY GUITAR STAY IN TUNE?
  • DO I TAKE A MINUTE BETWEEN SONGS TO TUNE MY GUITAR IF ITS OUT OF TUNE?
  • DO I HAVE BACK UP STRINGS, PICKS, CAPO'S, BATTERIES, MIC, GUITAR, CABLES, ETC.?
  • DO I HAVE A COMPLETE WEBSITE?
  • DO I HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA SITES UP AND RUNNING?
  • DO I HAVE ALL THE SOCIAL MEDIA TOOLS WORKING CORRECTLY WITH UPDATED INFORMATION?
  • AM I ABLE TO CREATE EVENTS AND MARKET MY SHOWS?
  • DID I TAG THE VENUE IN MY MARKETING OF MY SHOW?
  • DID I INVITE OR EMAIL MY FAN BASE? WAIT DO I HAVE A FAN BASE TO MARKET TO?
  • DO I HAVE A PROFESSIONAL RECORDING OF A COUPLE OF MY SONGS TO EVEN USE FOR BOOKING AND BUILDING MY FAN BASE?
  • DO I HAVE ANY DECENT VIDEOS OF ME PERFORMING OR COVERING A SONG?
  • DO I HAVE DECENT PHOTOS TO USE FOR MARKETING?

Let us take a break and answer these questions. If you answered no to any of these you probably should hold off on trying to book a paid show. Now, I'm not saying this to tear you down or tell you that you're not good enough. I'm simply trying to save you from making a huge mistake I watch hundreds of musicians make on a regular basis. Listen, I totally get it...and guess what I MADE THESE MISTAKES and IT COST ME!!!

Guys and Gals this isn't a race!!! YOU WILL GET THERE but IT TAKES TIME. I am simply trying to encourage you to take your time and do things right so you're not spinning your wheels. You need to keep your day job and invest your money into good equipment, a social media presence, a website, and all the tools that will make you successful. A simple Acoustic recording can work miracles for your booking efforts. A simple homemade video of you covering a song looks better than NOTHING!!! Take your time and do this right. If this was easy, everyone would be doing this for a living.

I hope this sinks in and makes sense. I have been where you are at and I know it is very very frustrating. I know you want this so bad. In closing, here is the simple truth; you will either listen to and apply my advice or you won't!!! The choice is yours and I'm here to help!!! Please share and follow this blog!!! Thank you for your support!

Way Beyond The Music - Artist Interview - Felix Truvere

Meet Felix Truvere!!!
I had the opportunity to interview Felix Truvere at my Residency Open Mic at Albert Icehouse & Dancehall in Albert, TX on 11/19/19. Felix and I have been the proverbial Facebook friends for over a decade now and had yet had the chance to meet in person. You know, time is a valuable commodity and I certainly wish I would have met this fellow musician many moons ago. Felix is a gracious, humble, and real person with a heart of gold. I meet a LOT of musicians and this guy is a genuine find for sure. Please take a moment to get to know Felix Truvere and do me a favor.... please go like this guy on all his social media and MOST IMPORTANTLY ADD HIM ON SPOTIFY and ADD HIM TO YOUR PLAYLISTS!!!
DO THIS NOW PLEASE: Follow Felix Truvere On Spotify
OUR INTERVIEW:

Felix's Bio:
I was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, graduated from John Marshall High School and received my Bachelors Degree in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Texas, San Antonio. I was a French Horn player and the Drum Major of my High School Band. I furthered my fun in "marching" music and fine-tuned my instrumental brass-playing through "Drum Corps International" the (DCI) World Champion “Cadets of Bergen County” in Bergenfield, NJ as a mellophone player. I became a high school band director for San Antonio schools in the 90s, then switched to teaching adults as a “bank trainer” for mortgage & loan underwriters at USAA Federal Savings Bank from 2001-2008. Life was proving to show so many different flavors in choices for opportunity. I decided to try a bit of this and that.
Today... “The Open Road” represents a "journey" we all share. We all learn to stand, fall, and get back up again. We all live a journey towards enlightenment. We walk a life-road of choices and "create" our world through our decisions as we manifest our story to reality. My enlightenments truly found me as I "quit" society's game-plan of choices "made" for me, and I began making my own choices. I started performing on stages as a country band in surrounding San Antonio saloons and clubs.
The first full-length country song I ever wrote was called, “Thou Shalt Not Bitch.” I recorded and released it with my first EP in 2012. It received a San Antonio Music Award from SA CURRENT for Best Original Song. SA CURRENT also awarded my band with multiple awards for Best Country Band, Best Song & Music Video for  “What Best Friends Do,” and Best Songwriter for my genre.
My COUNTRY songwriting is inspired by the country songs of my growing-up days from George Strait, Garth Brooks, Tracy Lawrence, Rick Trevino, Clay Walker, Tracy Bird, Gary Allan, and those wonderful country dance-styles from the Urban Cowboy Soundtrack. I once got to open for Dean Dillon (George Strait’s Songwriter—Thank you Brian Black) in Bandera, TX at the Longhorn Saloon. I discovered how alike I was to Dean Dillon, “the man”, in many ways. Meeting him was so influential that my "original" artistry began taking shape as I started CREATING my own country songs.
I tend to play on my lyrics with rhythm & rhyme, recurring musical phrases with recurring instrumental themes of similar stanzas, choruses, and versus that implant themselves in the mind and truly BRAND the song to stand out as its own. I make ‘em catchy and memorable ;) There's an art for the old "traditional" style of country song-writing rare to find on mainstream radio anymore. A Felix Truvere song must also be sincere, passionate, have humor, and the overall content MUST reveal an "enlightenment." I write about life’s experiences and how it is all MEANT to be. My songs say, “Let go; let God. Enjoy the ride and learn to BE.”
If I could afford it, I'd write, record, and produce other genres. PLENTY of musical influences from the last 5 decades inspire me to grab bits of each genre from the days when it was all NEW and artists & labels didn’t record music to TRY AND FIT IN; They USED to be CREATORS.
My past classical music education is also a big part of who I am. I wouldn’t have quite the knowledge for chord-progressions, intonation, musical phrases, timing, rhythms, and instrumentation without my music education and past experience as a High School Band Director. I give extra, special credit toward my time in the DCI World Champion Cadets of Bergen County in 1992-94 that fine-tuned my musicianship toward a very diligent work-ethic.

Lyric Music Videos - The Next Big Craze???

Why You Should Release & Use Lyric Music Videos

The old days of the MTV style videos has come and gone. Things are constantly changing in the video world and lyric music videos are the new craze! That's right, I said lyric music videos. The entire look and feel is different for sure. I can remember watching MTV all day long and waiting for my favorite Artist to put out their next music video. So, why have things changed and folks are digging on these lyric music videos???

Mike Baldo, the Senior Account Manager of Video Services at The Orchard said the following in an article on sonicbids (link listed below):

For better or worse, the days of tuning into awesome, cinematic music videos on MTV have been swallowed whole by reality TV marathons (RIP). These music videos still exist in part on YouTube and VEVO, but they're being consumed and advertised against differently than in the old days, making the ROI of a huge video production more questionable. This is both good and bad news depending on how you look at it.
Producing and shooting a classic MTV-style music video costs tens of thousands of dollars. When MTV was the only way to watch music videos, this was a painful but necessary struggle. Though these types of videos are still being made, they're no longer the unshakable standard. Since YouTube broke down the barriers of entry for publishing videos to the world, indie artists and major labels alike have found better ways to create videos for their music.
By embracing a more open community of viewers and creators, many artists have turned to lyric videos as a fast and cost-effective alternative to full video production. Because lyric videos don't necessarily require a live shoot, location, scheduling, and casting can be removed from the process. With less of a logistical headache, these videos are often faster to create and publish, which is huge if tight deadlines are imminent.
Though a great animator could still run up your production costs, you at least have options and some room to work with. By keeping your ideas simple, a good animator can get you an excellent lyric video relatively quickly and for much cheaper than a traditional music video shoot. Make no mistake though, lyric videos aren't just a cheap hack for indie artists on a budget. Huge pop acts like One Direction and Ariana Grande have used lyric videos to premiere Top 40 singles, generating millions of views.
If you have the budget to hire a crew and shoot an amazing music video, by all means do it. These are clearly the heavy-hitters of the music video world, but not always in the best way. Conversely, not having that budget doesn't mean you're limited to just Art Tracks. If you can create something in the middle with a clever, catchy lyric video, you've set yourself apart."
Still not sure a lyric music video is the way to go? Keep reading. I personally have seen this trend exploding and decided to start having lyric music videos made for each single I am releasing and pushing to radio. Radio, well we will tackle that in another post. In the meantime see what Sean Rameswaram said in an interview on his podcast.
The Internet loves lyrics.

"As soon as we could connect to the web, we used it to connect with our favorite music — and we keep finding new ways to do that.
At first it was clunky websites that gave you lyrics — though not necessarily the right ones — and plenty of ads for tracks and ringtones you didn't want. But now musicians and fans alike are getting creative with videos that showcase lyrics in new ways.
YouTube has played a big part in the rise of lyric videos, but it’s not a new concept. George Michael and Prince both toyed with the concept in the 1980s and early 1990s, when they just didn't feel like making music videos for their singles. Going further back, there's Bob Dylan's iconic, homemade cue-card video for "Subterranean Homesick Blues" from 1965.
That static style — simply words fading in and out over the audio — carried over to the Internet when fans started making their own lyric videos. ”They were just ripping the song from iTunes and putting it up,” says Kevin O’Keeffe, an entertainment writer for The Atlantic.
Then things got more interesting: For his 2010 hit "F--- You," Cee-Lo Green shot a regular music video for the radio-friendly version of the song. But he also produced a slick, animated lyric video for the R-rated original.
“It's sort of the form that we know now as the lyric video," O'Keeffe says. "It’s one blue screen and it's words appearing basically on top of each other and sliding in and out and everything. It's exuberant about it as it happens. The words 'F---  You’ literally just jump onto the screen harder than anything else.”
That song's popularity helped launch a tidal wave of lyric videos from artists like Justin TimberlakeNeko CaseAriana Grande and Katy Perry with her "Roar" video.
Now the lyric video is even having an influence on music videos: Check out the animated lyrics all over the music video for "Lie, Cheat, Steal” by Run The Jewels.
But innovation in the lyric world doesn't end there. If lyric videos are a great introduction to a song, sites like Genius offer crowd-sourced, annotated lyrics for those who want the stories and meanings behind the words. The site started with rap, but it's since branched out to music of any genre — not to mention Shakespeare and the State of the Union address.
“For anyone who loves these facts and loves these words, it feels very helpful,” says Sasha Frere-Jones, a veteran music critic who's now an executive editor at Genius. “We’re dealing with production, culture, transmission of symbols.”
For example, find the hidden meaning in first the line of Taylor Swift's "Blank Space."
“‘Incredible Things’ is the name of her perfume, and every single person I showed it to — and they are definitely people who like and know Taylor — were like, ‘What? I didn't know that,'" Frere-Jones says. “And I'm like, 'Yep, it's product placement.' Literally nobody knew that. First of all, including me.”
This story is based on an interview from PRI's Sideshow podcast with Sean Rameswaram"

Exclusive Artist Interview With Drew Moreland

Drew Moreland has a very interesting backstory and is rising fast on the Texas Music Scene. I had the opportunity to interview Drew after a Monday night showcase I host at the Old Ironhorse Saloon in Blanco, Texas. We sat in front of the fireplace there after his performance and got down to the REAL story behind this Texas Musician.

THE INTERVIEW:

ABOUT DREW

Born on January 12th, 1984 in San Antonio, TX, Drew Moreland was raised in a city with many converging cultures. Despite growing up in what is now the 7th largest city in the United States, Drew's life was grounded by his parents who both came from a small farming community. From an early age, he enjoyed listening to music and playing it came naturally. Drew currently resides in Marion, TX

BAND BEGININGS

Drew Moreland and the Neon Hustle got its start in the spring of 2016 as a songwriting project between Drew and his brother-in-law Garland (Lee) Wenner. At the time, there were no intentions to actually start a band. It wasn’t until Drew was invited to play country music at a summer event that a band materialized to play some of the songs they had written.

RECORDING

Drew's self titled debut album was recorded in the single-wide trailer where he lives in Marion, TX. This project has a darker/ grittier tone and covers some more serious subject matter than previously released singles. The writing process for the songs on this album was mixed, mostly co-written with Garland Lee Wenner and Matthew Parker. But, also includes material that Drew wrote while spending time on the road alone (Road Stone, Prayer of an Outlaw & North Wind).

PLAYING LIVE

Drew Moreland tours with his band, The Neon Hustle, and also as a solo acoustic act. Playing several nights every week, Drew made over 250 live performances in 2017. His live show has been received well by all (with the exception of a few disgruntled Cajuns who didn't like the song about Louisiana).

Texas Music Tip Of The Day - "Having Patience"

"Having Patience"

The definition of Patience - the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.

The biblical reference"Patience" implies suffering, enduring or waiting, as a determination of the will and not simply under necessity. As such it is an essential Christian virtue to the exercise of which there are many exhortations. We need to "wait patiently" for God, to endure uncomplainingly the various forms of sufferings, wrongs and evils that we meet with, and to bear patiently injustices which we cannot remedy and provocations we cannot remove.

I speak daily with new musicians trying to break into the Texas Music Scene. I get all kinds of questions and requests for advice. It was happening so much that I decided to start a YouTube Channel and this blog to help the musicians here in Texas, United States, and the world. The truth is, there is no magic wand one can wave to become successful as a professional musician. There are no shortcuts, tricks, etc. It's all about hard work, practice, more hard work, then more practice, then even more hard work, and just when you think you're there; there is more work to be done.

The saying Patience is a virtue is an understatement. It literally has been the demise of many talented performers I have come across. The eager beavers with the stars in their eyes and dreams as big as the sky. They feel because they are talented they deserve it. The truth is.... you don't!!! You earn it. If you don't have patience it will never ever come!!!

Tips on How to Develop Patience

  • Take a day where you make patience your goal for the entire day. Make a concerted effort to take your time and think about everything you do. At the end of the day, observe  all the ways in which you've made smarter decisions, got along better with others and actually understood what took place. Learn to do it on a daily basis. Developing patience is much like physical exercise because it requires persistence and effort.

  • Slow down. If you have the tendency to rush around and try to hurry things up, want things done immediately and can't wait for things to take their natural course, STOP. Take several deep breaths before you act or make a move. For example, if you're in a long lineup at the grocery store or in heavy traffic, make the decision to pause and not get worked up. Do some isometrics, listen to the radio, or just enjoy the view. Getting impatient won't make things move along any faster, so why get worked up for nothing?

  • Practice delaying gratification. When you want to reach for that dessert, second drink, or buying your tenth pair of red shoes, stop and think about it first. Maybe you don't need or want any of them that badly after all. You can save yourself some money or added calories.

  • Practice thinking before you speak. At times we blurt out the first thought that comes into our heads without considering the consequences. If we're patient, pause and go over what we want to say, we can avoid hurting or offending others.

Watch my YouTube Video on Having Patience as it relates to the music industry and being a performing musician. I encourage all of you to SUBSCRIBE to my YouTube Channel and follow me here for more great tips, interviews, etc. Click on the video below and be sure to SUBSCRIBE while you're watching!!!
